True leadership and community are built on a simple foundation: ensuring everyone feels they belong. On April 17, 2026, iLEAD Agua Dulce took a powerful step toward this goal with the official launch of their learner-led project, Cross Grade-Level Buddies. The initiative kicked off with a special visit from Eagle Rock and Professional Development Center Changemakers—Dan, Josán, and Hannah. iLEAD Agua Dulce learners proudly toured the guests around campus before opening up a transformative conversation centered on one vital question: “What’s one thing that has made me feel like I belong?”
That single question sparked a movement.

Driven by the desire to strengthen iLEAD Agua Dulce’s school culture, high schooler Annika stepped up as part of the Changemaker Cohort. Alongside School Director Wendy Maxwell and with the support of staff, Annika launched the “Cross Grade-Level Buddies” program, specifically pairing 8th graders with 4th graders for mentorship and support.
The project tackles an important challenge. According to the team’s project framework, the initiative was born from a desire to combat isolation and ensure no learner feels left out. The project set an ambitious goal: By the end of the school year, 80% of learners and staff will feel included and experience a greater sense of community.

The launch was an immediate success, showcasing what facilitator Mr. Harris described as “organic chemistry and positive social action” between the different age groups. Leading a room full of both energetic 4th graders and maturing 8th graders is a challenge, but Annika was a natural.
“Stepping up as a leader is no small feat,” Mr. Harris shared in a reflection to the team. “Annika, you handled everything like a natural superhero, and your growth as a leader is truly exciting to witness.”
The program is also heavily supported by iLEAD Agua Dulce staff, including Elsa Williamson, who worked diligently behind the scenes to coordinate the 8th graders’ schedules for the project.
To help the program reach its full potential, the team leaned into creative, Mr. Harris provided a specialized Mentorship Kit that utilizes superpower language and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This unique framework structures the pairings as 8th Guide Superheroes & 4th Grade Explorers.

This is a learner-led movement. With full creative freedom, high schooler Annika designed original activities, brainstormed logistics, and piloted her unique vision for the campus.
The Cross-Grade-Level Buddies empowered older learners to mentor younger learners, breaking down social barriers, and ensuring that every single person on campus knows they have a place where they belong.
Congratulations to the entire team on a super launch!
