Get the Dirt on Our Dirt

Our gardens are close to completion and we cannot wait to see the fruits of the learners’ labor! While our 1st and 2nd grade learners have been working with professional gardner and permaculturist, Vynnie McDaniel, on composting and plants, our 3rd-6th grade learners have been working on our garden beds under the guidance of professionals Paula Bradley and Chelsea Morel.

The process is a long one, as they had to lay metal mesh on the ground under all 12 beds to prevent gophers from eating the plants, problem-solve the irrigation system, use their mathematical skills with area and perimeter, create garden grids, and learn about a variety of plant species.

They are now in the process of creating hoop houses to protect the plants. Our gratitude goes out to the three professionals who are volunteering their time and hard work to ensure that our gardens will thrive, and also to the Murtishaw Family for their donation of much-needed supplies!

The entire school will work on the garden beds throughout the year and will reap the benefits of their work. In addition, as an added benefit, research shows that playing/working with dirt/soil boosts the immune system and acts as a natural antidepressant. Please take a moment when possible and check out our progress.
